Letterpress Revolution

pancakefrank.jpg

Design*Sponge recently launched a Letterpress Guide, a roundup of the most beautiful purveyors of letterpressed paper products on the Web. They don’t mention some of my favourites, like Aardvark, but they’ve introduced me to many new studios, like Pancake and Franks.

I have a 3×5 Kelsey letterpress that I picked up at auction, and the machine absolutely mystifies me. Luckily, there’s a wealth of classes and workshops available in Southern California, as well as online resources like BriarPress and FiveRoses to help get me up to speed.

Good thing, because after hauling 140lbs. of lead type across the country last summer, I sort of feel like now I need to use it.

Holy snap, an animated letterpressed Charlotte’s Web would be Awesome.

As a sidenote, “140 lbs of lead type” was my nickname in high school.

That is the awesomest nickname ever.

There was a guy a few years back who took apart a film frame by frame, exposed each frame onto Polaroid film, and then re-animated it. Ever since then, I’ve been looking for just such a tedious yet fascinating project. Letterpress movies are IT.
