oh canada

Hello all! Just a quick little note to let you all know that I will be taking a five week hiatus from ye IF blog because my husband and I are driving across Canada for our holidays. Yep, true. We live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and we are driving all the way to the East coast. Then we are turning around and driving through the USA (if they let me in) back.
I am so excited about my journey. I hope to take some much needed time to draw in my sketchbook, read books, snap photographs, visit art galleries and just generally gain some inspiration. I have an empty moleskin ready to go.
I’d like to get your advice, dear reader. If you have any recommendations for lovely arty things to see, inspiring places or uncharted territory I would love to hear it. Feel free to leave a comment!
(We are going to Regina, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax, PEI, Maine, Boston, Chicago and small towns and small towns and sights as we can fit!)

I am from a small town in Northern Michigan, (which wouldn’t be out of your way) and highly recommend a visit. It is called Petoskey and there are numerous little cities surrounding it that are just great small towns. You could also visit Mackinac Island, which is an island with an old historic fort. No cars allowed, only horses and bikes. If you make it there be sure to get some yummy fudge from Kilwin’s Chocolates, or try some Tom’s Mom’s cookies in Harbor Springs or some delicious perserves from American Spoon (www.spoon.com). Lots of sites to see and its right on Lake Michigan. Have a great trip!

The fossil cliffs in Joggins Nova Scotia were a highlight of my east cost adventure. Make sure to ask a local to show you what to look for when hunting for fossils!

I’d give my front teeth to be visiting Quebec City in the fall! It’s a gorgeous city and lots of nifty little shops and galleries. I can’t think of any names off the top of my head, but the old town is packed with them. A drive out to the I’lle d’Orleans is swell too - I highly recommend the chocolate shop in Ste. Petronille
And if you’re swinging through Maine towards Boston stop off in Portsmouth, NH. Some awesome art galleries including Nahcotta and Three Graces there and a coffee shop on every corner.

thank you everyone… these are super recommendations

Steve - it is so darn tragic that you are absent of butter tarts. My grandma makes the best ones. I wish I could put them in the mail for you.

When you’re in Montreal (make sure you visit Canada’s coolest city) you’ll have lots and lots of ‘arty’ things to see.
Cafe Atomic 3606 rue Ontario Est. (Metro Joliette) and Le Septieme (same space) have delicious cheap coffee and repertory film selection.
If you’re in Montreal at the beginning of November you may be able to catch Expozine (independent comics and zine expo - in the basement of the church on St. Laurent and St Joseph).
The Tam Tams are a spontaneous gathering of thousands (a large cluster of whom play bongos) in the big park on the mountain by the angel statue. It’s cool and happens every Sunday when it’s nice (though in the fall it peters out a bit). Picnique Electronique happens on Parc Jean-Drapeau every sunday, too, and is an electronic music dance party all day.
there are also lot’s of cool abandonned factories and things covered with graffiti (Factory Trout, for example, on the corner of St Remi and St Ambroise) in St Henri. It’s worth a gander. From there you can ride a bicycle (call me if you need an extra bicycle 514 264 5825) along the canal to the old port - which is old and quaint and worth a visit if you like architecture and horse drawn carraiges and expensive restaurants.
Fushcia is a wicked vegan place that serves food made with flowers (514 487 3155 - 54 Duluth Est.) from Wednesday to Saturday. The lunch is $5 table de hote and the dinner, by reservation, is 25 including everything - though I’d bring a chess board or a book (or a SKETCHBOOK!) ’cause we went this week and the whole 6 courses took 3.5 hours to be served - though they were each exquisite.
Aux Vivre is also a super cool vegan place with a BLT that substitutes grilled coconut for bacon. It’s on St Laurent two blocks above Mont Royal.
It’s a great town. Enjoy your trip.
Lucas
