  • “I clearly miscalculated how popular it would be to show Calvin urinating on a Ford logo.”

    Watterson’s Process by Bill Watterson

I spent the winter holiday at my parents’ house. While there, I rediscovered my collection of beat-up Calvin & Hobbes comics. Man! They are even better than I remembered them! It left me wondering what Bill Watterson is doing now. What does his fine art work look like? Is he drawing comics still… for himself or friends maybe? It’s a mystery that compelled me enough to scour the internet. While I didn’t figure anything out, I did find a lot of great stuff including this collection of rare artwork and relatively recent interview. Not to mention the Calvin & Hobbes collections that I picked up from the library.

That comic, more than any other single thing, more or less defined my sense of humor growing up.

I’m almost scared to go back and reread the books, but if you say they hold up, I’ll give it a shot.

it surprises me sometimes that NONE of my students know who Calvin & Hobbes are. i always figured that the strip would be come a classic but, without circulation, i guess it will fade away. When my students see the few drawings of Calvin & Hobbes that I have in my curriculum, the invariably say “Who’s the kid?”

i looooooved C&H as a child. When you go back as an adult to read them it still reads fantastic. Not like when you re-rent the old transformers cartoon or gremlins movie… those were better left as memories :)

Great stuff. Something else to check out: A few months ago, I came across this 1990 commencement speech from Waterson: http://home3.inet.tele.dk/stadil/spe_kc.htm.
