Comic-Clone Reading List, Part V
This year’s Comic Clone Reading List comes to a close with a series that has something for everyone: mortality, morality, monsters, mythology, magic, drama, fantasy, fine art, history, religion, romance, superheroes, horror, and more.
Sandman, written by Neil Gaiman with art by an endless parade of artists, is the story of Morpheus, an ageless, immortal king of dreams. Read individually, the comics were a playground for Gaiman and his collaborators to tell beautiful, wonderful, thought-provoking stories about anyone who ever dreamed a dream. Read as a whole, the seventy-five original comics followed Dream’s journey from an ancient god imprisoned for 70 years to a revitalized adventurer determined to right his past wrongs. Dip your toe into the Dreaming to see if you like it. But don’t be surprised if you get swept away; Sandman was one of the few comic books ever to make it to the New York Times Best Sellers list, and Entertainment Weekly named it as one of the best 100 Reads from 1983 to 2008. Once you’re hooked, the original series and its many spin-offs could keep you busy until next year’s reading list.
