Melissa Sweet‘s illustrations are, well… sweet. She has illustrated nearly 100 children’s books from board books to picture books and nonfiction titles. Her collages and paintings have appeared in the New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, Madison Park Greetings, Smilebox  and for eeBoo Toys, which have garnered the Oppenheim and Parents Choice Awards. She has written and illustrated three books: Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade, Tupelo Rides the Rails, and Carmine: A Little More Red, a New York Times Best Illustrated, 2005.

My daughter has a few of her books and we always ooh and ahh over the whimsical pictures. :)

Ever-inspiring author and illustrator Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw is collaborating with Oopsy Daisy to host a super fun contest for young artists. Jenny’s new book Same, Same but Different came out earlier this year and this contest ties in with that. What a fun contest to inspire your kiddos to make art!

Same, Same But Different is the new book out by children’s author/illustrator Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw (you can read her 2008 IF interview here!). The story is about Elliot who lives in America and Kailash who lives in India. They are penpals and by exchanging letters and pictures, they learn they both love to climb trees, have pets, and go to school. Their worlds might look different, but they are quite similar. Same, same. But different! The story is really fun and the artwork will really amaze you (and your kids!)… there’s so much to look at!

And, because I always like to see artists at work… you should definitely check out this blog post by Jenny Sue about her process!

You can order the book at your local independent bookstore, check it out from the library, or pick it up from Amazon.

A tiny tad more about the author: Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw is the author and illustrator of My Travelin’ Eye. She is a freelance illustrator who studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and The Illustration Academy. When she isn’t traveling around the world, Jenny plays and paints on a homestead in the mountains of Northern New Mexico with her family.

Oy Ahoy, a team of app developers is about to inspire a digitally led cultural revolution initiated by kids all over the world. They just released their first app, Oy Mexico, a freshly illustrated adventure inspired by the Mexican tradition Dia de los Muertos. Wilmer Murillo, Honduras, has illustrated Oy Mexico and create something magical! Kids love the images, they hope you do to.

Like most kids, my daughter just adores coloring. I’ve found most coloring books to be pretty uninspired… Until I came across this. I think it’s super cool with interesting prompts, fun ideas and nice bold visuals. Little kids might need help from parents, but it’d be fun for big kids (ahem, yourself) too.

Tiny Art Director - Bill Zeman documents the process of taking art direction from his four year old daughter. The book of their collaborations will be published in April by Chronicle Books.

AxeCop! Five year old Malachi writes the stories, and his big brother Ethan draws them. Their site is currently a bit shaky from all the attention, but AxeCop’s Twitter Feed is still supplying the fun.

The talented Fernanda Cohen is producing a children’s book workshop led by Selina Alko & Sean Qualls at the Society of Illustrators of NY on Wednesday, October 28th. Alko and Quall’s clients include Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Henry Holt, Scholastic, Lee & Low Books and Knopf.

This event is perfect for illustrators who want to break into the picture book industry and need that extra push and solid pointers.

This is SO COOL. Aaron Zenz, illustrator and dad extraordinaire, created a blog called Chicken Nugget Lemon Tooty for his three kids (Isaac, Grace, and Lily) who draw and participate regularly in Illustration Friday. This month they are celebrating their 3 year anniversary and 250th post (wow!), and to do so posted an open invitation for visitors to dive into the archives, pick a favorite image, and do their own take on it. So illustrators (many of them also IF participants) have chosen one of the kiddo drawings and created it in their style. The results are so fun!

Aaron tells me that he’s keeping the invitation open through the rest of the month if anyone else wants to join in. So go. Go now! :)

Geninne D. Zlatkis was born in NY, but has stretched her wings all over Latin America & the US before building her nest atop a mountain near Mexico City. There she lives with her husband and two sons while painting, sewing and embroidering adorable creations of all sorts.

What has captured my fancy has been Geninne’s birds. As a lover of all things avian, I was instantly smitten with any bird that flew from the tip of her brushes from the first entry of hers that I ran across here on i-friday. (I especially love those she gave little bird-brain sized hats!) Since then I always make it a point to swoop by Geninne’s Art Blog to see what whimsies she’s been spinning.
