It was the first time I realized how much illustration can be found in typography, though it doesn’t mean (at all) the two always use each other.

Ever since then I’ve been paying much more attention to typography, understanding it’s not only a tool that often complements illustration, but it can also be seen as illustration if we stretch the definition of what we do just a bit.

This is all to humbly justify my posting a typography piece of news here, hoping you’ll find it as interesting as I do.

Typographer Ale Paul, co-founder of the internationally renowned typography collective Sudtipos, will be lecturing at The Type Directors Club in New York on Wednesday, June 8th, 6- 7.30 PM (as part of the Type Masters Week NYC.)

Sudtipos features over 100 different fonts by typographers, graphic designers and illustrators- just like us!

They include: Ale Paul, Angel Koziupa, Laura Varsky, John Moore, Eli Castellanos, Ariel Di Lisio, Alfredo Graziani, Ariel Garofalo, Daniel Hernández, Miguel Hernández, Diego Giaccone, Alfredo Graziani, Mati, Valeria Duarte, Claudio Pousada, Augusto Consthanzo, Jorge Alderete, Facundo Velilla, Natalia Español & Charles Bluemlein.

This is SO COOL. Aaron Zenz, illustrator and dad extraordinaire, created a blog called Chicken Nugget Lemon Tooty for his three kids (Isaac, Grace, and Lily) who draw and participate regularly in Illustration Friday. This month they are celebrating their 3 year anniversary and 250th post (wow!), and to do so posted an open invitation for visitors to dive into the archives, pick a favorite image, and do their own take on it. So illustrators (many of them also IF participants) have chosen one of the kiddo drawings and created it in their style. The results are so fun!

Aaron tells me that he’s keeping the invitation open through the rest of the month if anyone else wants to join in. So go. Go now! :)

In browsing the IF submissions, I came across Dani Torrent’s gorgeous work. Dani is from Barcelona Spain and has a portfolio site here and a blog here. Wow! Can’t wait to see more.
