IF Participant Mini Interview :: 5 Things About Sabine Remy

Illustration Friday ARTISTS is a series highlighting YOU — the IF Participants! We are randomly emailing out mini-interview questions. You could be next — watch your inbox! Welcome to your art community! :)

Name: Sabine Remy
Website: www.miriskum.de
Location: Germany

Fave IF Topic you’ve illustrated:
I  really like my latest collage, which is taken from the series “Helen and Bob in Absurdistan.”

On a trip through magazines of the 1950s I met two nameless characters. A Mona-Lisa like smiling SHE, who looked stupidly indifferent into the camera. And HIM who had discovered something up in the sky that made him open his umbrella. This must be Helen and Bob – I had no doubt.

Soon it became clear to me: They should go on a journey where they experience unsettling, bizarre and unorthodox situations: a journey through Absurdistan. This was the starting point for my collage series from which I posted a piece for this week’s Illustration Friday theme “Water.”

5 Questions:

1. What is something you would like to learn to do?
Screen printing! Without spilling!
Improve my English (because I needed friends to translate)
Design patterns and sew clothes

2. What’s your most-used art tool?
Collage

3. Three things that inspire you (yes, only 3):
Life
Feelings
My curiousity
Pictures and themes
(I admit, that’s four)

4. What are you looking forward to?
I’m planning a bigger project with family slides from the 1950s and 1960s.

5. Tell us something random about yourself.
- I like writing very much and I often find it hard to shorten things up.
– For years now I eat muesli in the morning  with lots of fruits and delight.
– I can not sleep without my earplugs and my pretty eye mask.
– Although I love order I find it sometimes hard to keep my things tidy. But that does not really matter.
– I only wear dresses, never pants. Moreover I am a shoe-addict. But that is nothing special I guess – every second woman loves shoes.
– Humor is key for me because I love to laugh!

*Thanks Sabine!

IF Participant Mini Interview :: 5 Things About Tanja Loeser

Hi guys!! Illustration Friday ARTISTS is a new series highlighting YOU — the IF Participants. We are randomly emailing out mini-interview questions. You could be next — watch your inbox! Welcome to your art community! :)

Name: Tanja Loeser
Website: rehline.blogspot.de
Location: Duesseldorf, Germany

Fave IF Topic you’ve illustrated:
IF bounce was so much fun! I used to love bouncing as a kid, now my children love it!

Bouncing has a feeling of freedom to it. It makes one laugh and giggle and one can reach otherwise unreachable things… I like the fact that anything is possible in illustrations, the world and its components can be swirled around and be mixed together in unusual combinations that law of nature itself would not allow. So it is possible to “bounce on the moons”…

5 Questions:

1. What is something you would like to learn to do?
People have always told me that my work is so different all the time. I even almost got rejected by a university because they did not believe I did all the drawings for the admissions map myself…

Therefore:Either find “my own style” or – accept that different styles are my style… I want to learn for myself to find my approach and which way I want to go in this everyday struggle related to this issue.

2. What’s your most-used art tool?
My hands and fingers holding pen. They let me create the basic of the illustration, the soul to say.

Their curvy, soft, strong, defined, doodly , scribbly, straight, dotsy etc. lines let me create the basic matrix of the illustration, the soul to say.

3. Three things that inspire you (yes, only 3):
1) my freezer – on which I pin stimulating images, articles, photographs, advertisings, poems and my childrens inspiring works of art!
2) childhood memories, experienced situations and the essence and feelings I took of out of them
3) patterns, colours, textures, consistencies, structures both from nature or artificial and looking at other people’s creations (art, painting, cooking, music, crafts, buildings, designs)

4. What are you looking forward to?
The rest of my life….with lots of fun, drama, inspiration, education, learning and seeing where the neverending and always accompanying creative urge will take me…

5. Tell us something random about yourself.
Some colours have such nice consistencies, I think they look delicious and yummy… Some sauces have such nice consistencies, I think they would apply nicely to canvas…

*Thanks Tanja!

5 Things About IF Participant Richard Ewing

Hi guys!! Illustration Friday ARTISTS is a new series highlighting YOU — the IF Participants. We are randomly emailing out mini-interview questions. You could be next — watch your inbox! Welcome to your art community! :)

Name: Richard Ewing
Website: carickature.blogspot.com
Location: California

Fave IF Topic you’ve illustrated:
This was a very difficult choice. Over the past years there have been many enjoyable challenges and images. I find that, at times, the word prompt is a lot of fun to conceptualize around and opine to but the resulting art may end up just fair to middlin’. Conversely, I’ve occasionally read a new week’s word and thought –I’ll not get much out of this stupid word — and then found that the finished illustration is one of my favorites. Odd how that works.

Having to select just one I think I’ll go with a more recent one from last month:  TEACHER.

When I’m not illustrating I’m teaching art at a couple of colleges, so this was right down my alley. I approach each IF prompt by finding a known personage to caricature, and this week’s victim was Severus Snape.

5 Questions:

1. What is something you would like to learn to do?
When I set out to participate in Illustration Friday I had two goals in mind.

One was to experiment visually with wild abandon  — self directed. (and to master these explorations)

Secondly, I wanted to increase my speed in completing finished art.

These are still my goals, so in a nutshell I’d say I am teaching myself to shorten the time it takes to do an image, while increasing the professionality and polish of the finished art.

2. What’s your most-used art tool?
The Paintbrush. Most of my inking and paintwork is done with a round or flat.

3. 3 things that inspire you (yes, only 3):
1) Looking at drawings and paintings that push the edge form-wise, application-wise, and compositionally. If it bends my eye, then I want wallow in it.

2) Studying the creative arc of all artists, ranging from musicians, illustrators, writers, actors etc. I delve into their peaks and valleys and try to understand why or how they arrived at any particular point or level.  This is sometimes more revealing than the art they create. It’s all about process.

3) Other friends and colleagues who are busy doing THEIR art. I like to have others around to ping my pong…. uh, so to speak.

4. What are you looking forward to?
My next cup of coffee… and then on a larger horizon, having more time to solely do illustration projects and the like… I just want to paint and draw pictures… and ride my bike.

5. Tell us something random about yourself.
My favorite color is Violet …but not purple.

*Thanks Richard!

Richard has been participating in IF for 122 weeks in a row!! Amazing! Check out his work!

5 Things About IF Participant Sharon Wagner

Hi guys!! Illustration Friday ARTISTS is a new series highlighting YOU — the IF Participants. We are randomly emailing out mini-interview questions. You could be next — watch your inbox! Welcome to your art community! :)

Name: Sharon Wagner
Website: sharonwagnerillustration.blogspot.com
Location: Minneapolis
Fave IF Topic you’ve illustrated: I think that would have to be my very first submission for Surrender. It is my favorite self portrait illustration. It is kind of cute, creepy and weird all at the same time. I’m Snow White by the way. Not the gorilla!

1. What is something you would like to learn to do?
Build a better contract. Tomorrow is a new day with no contract mistakes in it. Hopefully.

2. What’s your most-used art tool?
Q-tips. No joke.

3. 3 things that inspire you (yes, only 3):
1) Well, I’d be lying if I didn’t mention pinterest as one. It is like subscribing to 100 art magazines. And since I don’t do a lot of internet  wandering myself, I can let someone else find the best images. Then you just grab the ones that inspire you.

2)  Vacations. When I get back I always want to do some oil paintings of my favorite memories. But I never do.

3)  Illustration Contests! I love a good challenge.

4. What are you looking forward to?
My second book, “Maya Monkey” is being published later this year. Or early next. I’m going bananas waiting.

5. Tell us something random about yourself.
I can’t wait for the new season of American Horror Story. They better not have changed the theme song or opening trailer. You know you are in for a wild and strange journey when that blasts across the screen!

*Thanks Sharon! And thank everyone else who participates in IF each week. Your creativity is amazing!!

What is something you would like to learn to do?
I would like to learn how to cook, play piano and dance a lot better … LOL

What’s your most-used art tool?
At Lucas Film, I use proprietary 3D animation program developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) … sort of similar to Maya for 3D story development/previz.

For my personal art project, my favorite medium is watercolor.

3 things that inspire you (yes, only 3):
1) For the most part inspiration come from my everyday life … I draw inspiration from past memories that’s close to heart; friends, family … people I love; and how people or things make me feel on daily bases.

2) Various other art forms – book, music, theater play, dance, movie etc..

3) Travel … I like to travel to new places to find inspiration

What are you looking forward to?
I just completed my first children picture book with my talented writer friend, Phil Amara, Tree House Heroes and the Forgotten Beast recently.  This book will be released in Oct 2012.  I learn a lot from working on this book, and discover I enjoy book illustration very much.  I hope I will get to do more book illustration in the future.

Right now I am looking forward to all the up-coming Tree House Heroes book events … It will be my very first time going to conventions and book events as an artist not a visitor … will be a very fun and new experience for me!!

Tell us something random about yourself.
With the advancement of modern technology, many traditional heritage cultures have been under appreciated … while some are slowly disappearing …

Someday, I wish I could to travel round the world … and use my paint brush to record traditional culture, sound and customs from different regions … and published travel story books about all the colorful and beautiful culture in different part of the world.
