not specifically but a few basics in relation to buying ad space on a site.
1. ask to see their site statistics
2. check their demographics
3. ask to talk to some of their current clients and see what kind of responce they are getting.
4. consider the risk to return ratio.

I know of the site, its a uk based site run by the son of a well known illustrators agent, so running in the family! Pretty reputable, I think it has a decent reputation, I have heard of a few people getting jobs from it.

Hi Jen,

I've been there for almost a year with no luck so far... but I am thinking of giving it one more try.

Before registering with them I sent emails to about 25 members and asked about their experience with www.childrensillustrators.com. Most of them said that they have had commissions or at least inquires through the website.

I guess I have to work on my portfolio :)

Re: ad space on www.childrensillustrators.com?

Hi there -- I have had a portfolio on childrensillustrators.com for several years. It is relatively inexpensive (about $200/yr) and every time I think I should stop paying for it I get a little job from it that keeps me there. Most of the jobs have been small, but this year I got a picture book job (I Love Your Heart, by Tim McGraw, due out in January 2010, Thomas Nelson), which blew my mind! So yes, real publishers are really looking, at least in my experience.

I have been concerned that the odds that someone who is just browsing will find ME seem small (there are lots of people on the site). However, the search mechanisms are pretty good as long as you put tags on your images to identify style, subject, medium, etc. Also, I have heard that putting up new work regularly makes it more likely that your images will appear in some of the random flash rotations that they have on every page (not sure it's true).

All in all, I would recommend it. Good luck!
