Ideas for self-promotion, beyond the postcard?

Hello! I've been trying to think of some clever ways to self promote beyond the typical postcard send out. I was wondering if people have any clever, different, unique or maybe just plain ol' successful stuff that they've done or they've seen other people do?
I want to come up with something unique, but I thought hearing some other ideas might get those juices flowing. haha. Any insight welcome! I'm new to it :)
