Maybe i should a definition; Client Directories is 'The Directories provide an inexpensive way to acquire contact details allowing you to promote your work to various types of illustration commissioners.

There are three directories available: Advertising, Editorial and Publishing, providing hundreds of contact details of illustration commissioners. Each contact includes information about their identity and the style of illustration they are interested in, to enable you to contact commissioners appropriate for your own work'

about 500 art directors contact details in each which for £33 it pretty nice to me

Well i checked foliofox.com had a look for newspapers and magazine publishing which had 1 enter and advertising agency which seemed to be full of illustrators lol tho i will be registering with the web site ;) so thanks for the infomation

im very surprised these Directories are not used by more people...

or i superpose every one may be keeping there self promotion resources as carefully guard secrets ...

i enjoyed http://www.flickr.com/photos/42230120@N08/3886328559/ yeah would love to see more examples, it has a nice scene of odd to it.

Timothy have you ever seen the work david shrigley of what do you think of the work of it?

they have an nice sense of humor to them, but i think the rendering could be a bit more organic because computer generated can feel quite sterile some time and your work does have that humor and warmth to them, but this may be just more my preference to be honest ;)

the colors in the second two are really aesthetically pleasing choice of colors, the first seems a bit flat. The center painting of the buildings it seem to have movement and solidity it very enjoyable to look at, i think i like your brush strokes larger then smaller ...

do you have blog or web site?

have you every tried other subject matters? none land scapes

could we see a work in progress ?

it's possibly to do with the informality of the internet, and a fear of how the critic may come across thought the typed medium apposed to the spoken word. I think this is also paired with the fact that some time i don't feel qualified to give critique lol.
may more conversation about each weeks subject would help create more conversation.

well the markets I'm aiming for are primary editorial, but positively adverting and book jackets but that seem very had to get in to....

So i want some thing contemporary with impact, and the communicates, Guess i will see what Ive got that has these quality in them..

I'm considering 'over side post card' on vista print, also looking at getting the 2 Client Directories for editorial / adverting from the AOI(which will be about 1000 contacts) so i was thinking of getting that many cards printed, with the understanding that i will not be sending a mail out to ever one on thos list so i will have some spare to hand out when I show my portfolio to peps...

i but still wont be able to make my mind up tho lol

I was wondering about what ever resources every here is using to aid in self promotion?

personally i found the  AOI Client Directories very good and i have got work out them but i only email dint post so thus only contacted a quarter of the list which was foolish on my part. hence the previous post about post cards

and i'm currently trying to see if graphic artists guild which is the US version of the AOI has any thing the same but not finding much luck..

I got the writer and artist hand book form a library once , it seem more aimed at writes then illustrators

where else should i be looking?

what is every one else using?

I'm have difficulty picking a illustration to put on a post card for mail out promotion purposes do I have any thing I could use in my portfolio? or should I make a new for the purpose a mail out?

plz could you look at my web site and feed back

JamesPepper.net

i'm leaning to wards make some thing for it...

i think the 3 more colourful pieces would have the broadest appeal, the cakes are a nice take on a fun chic subject matter ;) Ive never really tried art/craft fair so would be interesting to see how that works out for you.
good luck

I'm not expert in networking still working it out, but yeah a million sounds swell I'm looking forward to seeing that list, do all the people i want to show my work to and talk to use them as well ?

As i agreed with you in my last post I would not go posting a 300 dpi poster or print materiel but a small cropped image I don't see that such an issues. What I like about face book is that its give me the opportunity to converse/interact with larger organisation / clients in a different manner than if I where just emailing them.

im not actually a fan of facebook, I have oneline folio and blog but its trying to get people to look at its the key, I just see FB as a tool to do that, I've have tryed using LinkedIn but that seem like id have to have a working relation with some one before i could start pestering them. any one got any other thoughts on facebook or networking methods online?

wow never thought about it really, i went and look and found this "2.1" , and its the same, it dosnt sound good, but face book has such potential for share work with other people, would be a shame not to use it?

But if i was to be selling illustrations as prints or badges be id think differently about it.

found another article about this as well...

a very intresting question, i do use/have bouth and they each have their own purpose. For an online folio all you need is a web site show your work, and i know wordpress gives facility to have separate pages which is good for folio, info about you, cv etc..   But i have applied for jobs where the submission policey states no myspaces or outher social network/media, but you could get word press website and have your own domain name   I guess a website can be v profecional where a blog can show you are very productive.  As long as its clear how to find your work i dont think it matters wich you use. I will try to find some exsamples of good wordpress folios, when in not on phone\metro, if any one else knows of any plz post them

i look at this topic as some one who graduated a illustration & design degree a year a go, in school it was taugth that it all comes down to ideas. which is true on the higher end of the market, when i left school i produced a A5 print based folio to send to 15 graphic designers in my local area. the feed back i got was people want type and logos. i am currentely trying to create a more graphic design base folio, but never really did much of this on my degree,so iguess im saying my experience has been they are two very separate areas. i hope this does not sound like complaing ;)

they offer a higher level of production to more people, but they cant improve the way you think. the idea behind a work is not changed by how is was renderd.

http://www.anorak-magazine.co.uk/blog/p … mpetition/

the chance to produce the cover for a cool children magazine, its only open to student tho, i hope people post what they enter hear as well

At Anorak we thrive on supporting young talent. We have hundreds of ‘little editors’ around the globe who draw lovely things, write lovely stories and review books. We would like to give art students & recent graduates the opportunity to be part of our crazy colourful world and showcase their talent.

With this in mind, we are extremely excited and proud to launch a very special Anorak Design Mission, in collaboration with our lovely friends at Tate, Sharpie Pens, Design Toy Store and Human Empire.

Open to all art students from around the world, we are giving you the opportunity to come up with an innovative design for the cover of our Winter issue of Anorak magazine. The cover must contain the following words: ‘Anorak the happy mag for kids’ and must be fun.
Anything else, we leave up to your imagination and undoubtedly mind-boggling doodling skills.

What do you win?
The first prize will see their drawing on Anorak’s Winter outside back cover, and will receive a bundle of Tate goodies picked by Anorak’s creative director, Supermundane, worth £100 and a doodling pack from Sharpie Pens.
We will also pick three runners-up prizes: their drawings printed within the pages of the Winter issue of Anorak. Each will receive £50 Tate book vouchers, a doodling pack worth £25 from Sharpie Pens, a £25 voucher from the Design Toy Store and a ‘Tricky’ t-shirt by Human Empire.

Are you eligible?
To be eligible for this competition, you must be a student on any of Art or Design course at HND or degree level, or equivalent. You are also eligible if you are a recent graduate (2009).

apparently  Creating work that evokes mood and feeling is vital. I enjoy fast paced, spontaneous image making with a physical and metaphorical layer that creates sophisticated imagery that can be read on many levels, well that's what my web site says at least ... jamespepper.net ;)

I graduated from in illustration degree about a year, I've had a couple of editorial Communions but not enough, so im trying to be more pro active and all that jazz
