Do we want robot croupiers?

Land-based casinos have been having a tough time in recent years. While online casinos have gone from strength to strength, the brick-and-mortar alternatives are simply not thriving in the same way. One possible salvation for physical casinos is embracing tech and employing machines to do the dealing.

A success story

Every element of our life has been touched by technological developments, and our gambling habits have changed dramatically. More and more people regularly visit a casino online at Paddy Power Games or an alternative site that offers the latest slots, roulette, blackjack or other real money games.

The big players in the market offer a vast array of different games. Of course, in such a thriving and competitive market, these gaming platforms have gotten faster, more user-friendly, and more intuitive in an effort to constantly develop. The games available now, particularly those with live dealers interacting with players, represent a staggering advancement when we consider the glitchy initial online casinos that appeared in the 90s.

While the improvement of iGaming is evident, there’s also been a lot going on behind the scenes. Platforms have massively improved the user experience by adopting sophisticated software in addition to becoming more reliable and secure by integrating reliable and effective cybersecurity systems into their platforms.

The best online casinos are not resting on their laurels and continue to look to tech as the source of improvement.  The use of artificial intelligence allows providers to deliver customized material based on their prior behavior and create alluring incentives for both new and seasoned clients.

Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Blockchain technology will no doubt play a part in the future of online casinos. Yet, the focus now shifts to land-based casinos to explore how they can learn from IGaming and adopt new, innovative technology to help them remain competitive.

Robot on the table

Do we want robot croupiers

Roba is a croupier robot that takes on all the duties and activities of a dealer. It was introduced at the end of 2021 and is adept at dealing cards, gathering cards from the table, feeding them into the shuffler for the following round, and displaying game results.

For land-based casinos, the advantages of using Roba are eliminating human error, improving the accuracy of dealing, offering a 24/7 automated gaming experience, and most importantly, saving money on wages. The human aspect has been questioned across all industries during recent challenging times, and many companies have turned to automation to improve efficiency and cut costs.

The human-to-player interaction that comes with an in-person dealer in a casino setting is undoubtedly one of the biggest draws for customers. Indeed, casino game developers Evolution added live dealers to their games to ensure that player-to-dealer interaction remained. For this reason, many believe that Roba and other croupier robots being developed aren’t the innovation to save land-based casinos, but simply hold a novelty factor that will soon expire.

When we think of robots interacting with humans, movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey come to mind, often conjuring independent and autonomous machines. But so much of the current technology is about automating processes. Undoubtedly, robotics and AI will become more of a part of our lives in the future as more complex decisions and interactions can be taught. It’s just not yet certain that tech will be anywhere near as beneficial for land-based casinos as it has been for online alternatives.
